Lot 3906
Netherlands - Gelderland. Gold Real d'or, ND (1557-1560 issue). Fr-75. Philip II of Spain, 1555-1576. English titles. Crowned head of Philip facing right. Legend reads: King of Spain and England. Reverse: Crowned shield containing the arms of the House of Hapsburg. This is a nicely struck example of a rare coin, with an abundance of original luster. Seldom ever now seen in top grade, this coin is fully round, on a good flan. Strong links with the English hammered gold series gives the coin broad appeal. NGC graded AU-58.

** Philip II was King of Spain from 1556-1598, King of England (co-regent with Mary I) from 1554-1558, King of Portugal and the Algarves (as Philip I) from 1580 until 1598 and King of Chile from 1554-1556.
Philip's first marriage in 1543 was to his cousin Princess Maria of Portugal, but she died shortly after giving birth to a son, Don Carlos. Later, Philip sought an alliance with England and married the Catholic Queen Mary I in 1554. Under the terms of the marriage, Philip became King Consort during the lifetime of his spouse. Philip succeeded to the throne of Spain on the abdication of his father in 1556. Two years later, mary died childless.

During Philip's reign the Philippine Islands were conquered and named after him, and a North American colony was established in Florida. But his reign was troubled by financial instability and threatened by Muslim invasion, and other costly conflicts such as wars with england (where his Armada was defeated in 1588) and France.

In the 17 provinces of the Netherlands, Philip II continued a policy of heavy taxation, and following the 1566 Calvinst revolt he set out to stamp out 'treason' and 'heresy'. Soon he introduced a new sales tax of roughly 10% and the situation worsened. The region fell into open revolt, led by William the Silent of the House of Orange, but the uprising was brutally crushed by the Duke of Alba who condemned thousands to death and confiscated lands. Eventually, after the Pacification of Ghent in 1576 many of the Spanish troops mutinied and the seven northern provinces (the United Provinces) eventually declared their independence from the King of Spain. From 1590 until his death in 1598 Philip was again at war with the French King Henry IV.

Under Philip II of Spain reached the peak of its power but it also met its limits. Having nearly reconquered the rebellious Netherlands, Philip's intolerance led to their permanent loss. The strain of fighting on so many expensive fronts meant that the King was unable to spend sufficient time and mony to subdue the fiercely independent Dutch.
Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,000.

Lot 3909
Netherlands - Holland. Double Ducat, 1655. Fr-247. Armoured figure holding sword upright. Reverse: Square plaque with inscription. Lightly cleaned. Glistening with original luster, this rare coin has never seen circulation. An exceptional specimen from the mid-17th century, when Oliver Cromwell was establishing his authority across the sea! Uncirculated.

**The economic preponderance of the Province of Holland, as compared to other Provinces, helped give unity to the fragmented Netherlands state. Most of the Dutch financial and commercial enterprises were located in Holland. Holland regularly contributed over half of the National Budget. Because of its financial dominance Holland had a commanding voice in the conducting of government, and it was the great importance of Holland that made it commonplace to refer to the whole Netherlands as Holland.
In 1664 the English began their move into New Netherlands. During the first English-Dutch war of 1652-1654 Oliver Cromwell had planned to attack New Netherlands with the aid of the New England colonists, but the plan never came to fruition. In March 1664, Charles II formally annexed New Netherlands as an English province and gave it to his brother the Duke of York (later James II). The Duke sent a fleet under the command of Sir Richard Nicolls to seize the colony, and in September 1664, the Dutch General Pieter Stuyvesant surrendered. Both the city of New Amsterdam and the entire colony were renamed New York. In August 1673 the Dutch retook New York, but the territory was restored to Britain by the Treaty of Westminster in February 1674. And New York remained the premier British military stronghold in America until the British evacuated in 1783!

Netherlands - Utrecht. Gold Rider (Cavalier), 1619. Fr-286. Armoured figure on galloping horse, brandishing sword. Reverse: Crowned shield containing heraldic lion, date above. This large early 17th century hammered gold coin is very scarce in this grade - exceptionally well detailed in parts, and with good overall eye appeal. NGC graded AU-58.

** The early 1600's saw the effective start of Dutch colonization. When the Dutch began colonizing they were not originally too interested in North America as they preferred the more lucrative tropical products and the Baltic trade. Exploring vessels were sent between 1609 and 1614. It was the period when the Dutch became mildly interested in trade with the American Indians and finding a northeast passage through North America to the Orient. In 1609 an Englishman named Henry Hudson was hired by the Dutch to find this passage but the voyage of Hudson's ship, the Halve Moon, failed to find the passage. However, he brought back detailed maps and information on the northeast coast of North America.
In North America the Dutch claimed the land between the Delaware River and the Connecticut River, the territory was 175 miles in width at the coastline, and became known as New Netherlands. In 1625 Cryn Frederickz, the governor of the New Netherlands built Fort Amsterdam, on Manhattan Island. In 1626, Pieter Minuit took over from Governor Verhulst who has succeeded Fredericksz, and he purchased Manhattan Island from the Indians. It is interesting to speculate that the Dutch coins offered here would also be used to an extent in the area which would later become New York.

**On the death of Stadtholder William III the stadtholderate was suspended and the States-General resumed control of the government. But in 1747 the republican party lost power and William IV, of Orange, became hereditary statdholder. In the 18th century the relative commercial, military and cultural positions of the United Provinces in Europe declined, as those of England and France ascended. The Netherlands sided against England in the American Revolution and as a result lost several colonies at the Treaty of Paris in 1783.
